ORDINATIONS 2018
It was a joyful celebration on 1 December when a large number of our whanau gathered at Hinemaurea Marae, Wharekahika, for the commissioning and ordination of 19 minita for Te Tarawhiti. With candidates and ordinands presenting from across Ngati Porou, Turanganui-a-Kiwa, and Kahungunu, steady rain could do little to dampen the enthusiasm of those present.
Entreated on the day to be humble, proclaim the truth of a God who is love in word and action, and to never doubt their calling, we ask that we join together as one whanau in continuing to pray for our new Kaikarakia, Rikona and Pirihi in their new ministries and calling.
TE TUATAHI O AOTEAROA
90TH ANNIVERSARY - CONSECRATION OF F. A. BENNETT
Kohupatiki, remembered its impressive history on 2 December, as the ‘Holy Village’ and home to successive Bishops of Aotearoa as whanau from near and far gathered to mark the 90th anniversary of the ordination of Frederick Augustus Bennett as the first Pihopa o Aotearoa. Bennett was consecrated 2 December 1928.
90 years later to the day our sixth Pihopa o Aotearoa, Archbishop Don, and Bishop Ngarahu Katene, from Manawa o Te Wheke, joined with minita, whanau, and the descendants of the first bishops, to retell the story of the establishment of the first Pihopa, and later the Pihopatanga o Aotearoa, and to give thanks for the faithful and monumental service of so many over the years – not least of which was given by the people of Kohupatiki as our Aotearoa Bishops’ first Turangawaewae.
HAERENGA KI NGA ANAHERA
Around 20 made the trek to Los Angeles, 10-21 November, for an intensive two week course in Indigenous Ministry and Mission. Hosted in part by the Diocese of Los Angeles, teaching was undertaken by Professor Daniel Smith-Christopher, Loyola-Marymount University, on Exile in the Old Testament, alongside sessions on mission and social enterprise initiatives in the Diocese.
Participants also made pilgrimage to a number of significant sites and projects including San Gabriel, the first mission site in the immediate Los Angeles area and from which the indigenous Tongva took the name Gabrieleno; a wahi tapu of the Tongva people, Puvunga, where they locate the beginning of creation; St Stephen’s, Hollywood, which has developed over a dozen income streams over 20 years, growing its annual budget to over 1 million; and, Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation and reentry programme in the world.
